This Year to look for

On May 19 2018, the Elkhart Breakfast Optimist Club will have their Second Annual Pinewood Challenge. Again this will take place at the Elkhart Municipal Airport. Many of you are familiar with the pinewood derbies which typically are for the scout troops. This is more super-sized, we had four different Class’ a traditional which followed the rules of the scouts. Our next was the Outlaw Class which used the same size car base but was allowed to have double the weight and more freedom in material used. Our next class is our box truck which had to have 10 wheels. Our final Class was a tractor trailer or otherwise known as the 18 wheeler. What also make this fun it is open to ALL Sons, Daughters, Fathers and Mothers as a family event.

Event Update

On May 13 2017, the Elkhart Breakfast Optimist Club had their first annual Pinewood Challenge. Our event was a complete success. Our next class was our box truck which had to have 10 wheels. Our final Class was a tractor trailer or otherwise known as the 18 wheeler. What also make this fun it is open to ALL Sons, Daughters, Fathers and Mothers as a family event.

We would like to thank the Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese for stopping by and helping with our set up. We are thankful to our gold sponsor NIBCO. We’d like to thank Jason Hoff of Simonton Lake Drive In for donating the winner’s circle root beer toast as well as a T shirt and $5 coupon to each of the First Place Winners of each Class. We would like to thank the Elkhart Civil Air Patrol for providing the Opening Ceremony Colors. Dave Pixey of for providing the areal fly by, flown by Chuck Marshal for our opening ceremony.

One of our big surprises was that we had 2 race teams drive up from around the country, Virginia and North Carolina to race here in Elkhart. We had a boy scout that had entered under the Traditional class and took first place. This was his third win for his career at 9 years of age, Great future ahead of him. We had teams from the Elkhart Fire Department, Osolo Fire Department, Elkhart Police Department, Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, and NIBCO as well as many independent racers.

We would equally like to thank Northern Indiana Teen Challenge for their help with our parking, the Elkhart Luncheon Optimist Club for their help with our Cantina. Cub Scout Troop 117 for the use of the Race track we used. The Elkhart Airport for the rental of the Hanger for our event.
